The Flat Joe 5k was the first fundraiser planned by the Lt. Helton Memorial Foundation when the Board met for the first time in November of 2013. The 5k was a natural choice as Lt. Helton loved running. The first race took place in August of 2014 at Monroe High School, a place he visited every time he returned home. At the May 2016 Flat Joe 5k, Artist Micheal Garman unveiled the statue that was to top the Fallen Heroes Memorial.
Following installed of the statue in the Memorial Gardens, in 2017 the race was moved to its current location. Though a small area was landscaped around the Fallen Heroes statue, the park remained little more than empty patch for the 2017 and 2018 Flat Joe 5ks. In November of 2018, the Walton County Veterans Memorial was dedicated. Concrete walls and dirt have been replaced with granite and bricks, and is a breathtaking thank you to those who have sacrificed so much, and the few who gave their all for the many.
So, whether or not you're running, come on out! Cheer on the runners, share a moment of silence to thank those who have given the ultimate and the many who have given so much, chat with some of our AFJROTC cadets, the local law enforcement, Fire Deparment, and quick Responder representatives and check out their equipment. And...Hmmm...let's see what else we can come up with!
